The hottest Jam in town by a vastly vast measure indeed this month as we invite you down to witness two of Edinburgh’s finest DJs, musicians and producers in action behind the decks - Fudge Fingas and House of Traps, aka Gav Sutherland and Lindsay Todd from the world renowned Firecracker Recordings label. It is no understatement to say Firecracker are causing quite a stir amongst the most discerning music lovers the world over.

This label and these artists aren't just hype, they have delivered big time and its just out of luck that they hail from Edinburgh and have spent most of their lives involved in the local scene, most notably at Edinburghs independent music outlet Underground Solu'shn and legendary clubs nights Tribal Funktion, Higher Ground and the still running Ultragroove. Since the release of their first EP back in 2004 Firecracker have firmly established themselves amongst their peers as one of the most talked about and respected underground labels out there with fans as diverse as Derrick May and Moodymann to Lindstrom and the Idjut Boys. After the sheer buzz created by the first three firecracker EP's, the public demanded a repress after they quickly become collectors' items and thankfully Firecracker delivered.

Now on their fourth release, a remix of "Miles Away" by Steve Hitchell aka Intrusion of Deepchord, which takes on Linkwoods biggest track 'Miles Away' with two utterly sublime and heart-warming renditions poised to soundtrack fuzzy summer moments across the world in the coming months, like the previous Firecracker releases this is housed in screen printed sleeves and hand stamped centre labels pressed onto lush heavyweight vinyl.

As well as their own Firecracker Recordings, Gav is involved in many other productions with artists such as Trus'me and Linkwood , as well as currently playing keys for adorable Edinburgh based band Found, not to mention busying himself with forthcoming solo projects for Prime Numbers. Meanwhile Lindsay is one half of Linkwood Family along with Nick Moore, and has in the past worked with Joseph Malik, as of course has Mr. Fingas...

To put it bluntly, if you know anything about House music then there’s a high chance you will know who these boys are. It’s going to be a potent brew of funk, soul, disco and house.

First off is the new Joker 12” on Kapsize, Bristols man of the moment Joker is quite frankly, brilliant! This follows on from last years work with Rustie and keeps the same winning formula of Synth driven Dubstep and off beat basslines, Unique dubtep from a producer with a very bright future.

Next up is a track by Fred Ventura – “I’m not ready” on the mighty Clone. This is full on Italo disco originally released back in the 80's. Sadly this will be one of Clone records last release but them and I-F have re-issued this on glorious white vinyl and it sounds utterly amazing on a club sound system. This is vocal heavy with no break down, it just keeps going and going. A firm favourite @ Jam the Box.

Currently the techno market has been awash with expensive yet collectable dub techno. Many releases that have failed to push our bottons however this 2 track EP from Syrinx – “Million light years” on Rush Hour is certainly deep but very much dance floor friendly. Syrinx are Dutch and new on the scene (we think) although this release oozes experience on the production front and if they keep this up we'll be around for a long time.

Detroits Aesthetic Audio run by the ever impressive Keith Worthy is known for their Beatdown sound but their latest offering by Tony Lionni – “5th Cycle” on the label is a sure fire techno thriller. Chopped vocal and punching four to the floor bass make this a proper peak time hit.

This next track was originally released back in 1983, this defines the sound Electro for us. A simple groove with catching vocals. this got repressed after featuring on a Fabric Mix CD, think Egyptian Lover and Arabian Prince and you'll have a rough idea of what this classic record sounds like. I have to admit, its taken me a while to get my hands this track by Mayer Hawthorne & The Country, its on super limited, super sexy red heart-shaped vinyl. Both sides of this are tremendous and sound like they were recorded in the late 60’s, “Just Ain't Gonna Work Out” is the winner for me and whats even more impressive is Mayer plays all the instruments and sings himself, signed to Stones Throw is is an instant classic and even label boss Peanut Butter Wolf took a while to realise just how unique this release was ““He showed me two songs and I didn’t understand what I was listening to,” Wolf recalls. “I asked him if they were old songs that he did re-edits of – I couldn’t believe they were new songs and that he played all the instruments.”

The next is actually 2 separate records, they’ve both been causing a serious impact on the floor and are as good as each other so thought I’d mention both! It’s the Equalized 12’s, so far there’s been 2 of them (001 and 002) with nothing more than a marking that says Equalized 001 or Equalized 002 stamped on one side of a white label, they are both seriously heavy, driving synth based techno with a very distict Berlin / Detroit feel about them, both are absolutely essential, these are produced by Shed who has been one of my favourite techno producers for a while now, his productions seem to capture the dark funk of Detroit perfectly, I really hope this series runs for a while!

This one is an album I picked up recently by Fred Wesley & The Horny Horns - A Blow For Me, A Toot For You, this is one of what seems like an unlimited Parliament/Funkadelic off-shoots that George Clinton worked on in the late '70s, originally released in 1977 its classic ‘P-Funk’ produced by Bootsy Collins and George Clinton, it’s pretty much a dream line up of musicians including Maceo Parker amongst others, although the album is pretty much straight up Funk there are a few Jazz-Funk instrumental tracks on it that make it a great all round album for anyone into that 70’s Clinton sound!

Edinburgh based Indie Rock band The High Lines were formed in back 2004, brought together through a mutual love of good music, guitar playing and song writing. The band, Ross Fraser (Vocals), Nick Plain (Lead Guitar), Derek Bowden (Bass), Shafter (Rhythm) and Jonny Clueworth (Drums), wanted to make music that they could all relate to and generally add some spark to the Edinburgh music scene. With influences ranging from The Ramones to the Beatles, and from The Smiths to Wire, the lads have built up a good reputation around the capital. Their unpredictable, fast and furious live shows have also won them fans across Scotland, regularly visiting Glasgow and Fife. Fan favourites "It's My City" and "Magic Machine" are sure to be well received when they roll into Jam The Box on April 4th. Get involved.

Lewis Gibson of Dr Ruby's (Travelling Medicine Show) fame performs with the infamous Midas Touch to create a unique fusion of Folk, Blues, Pop and Rock; all with a distinctive Scottish twist. Watch out for the classic crowd-pleaser 'Lil Precious' (aka Movin' On) and much more... Prepare to be dazzled by his beard if nothing else.

Jam the box is a night jammed full of music idea's with an ethos of expect the unexpected. with this in mind starting on April 4th, Jam the Box with begin a bi-monthly "Live" night, showcasing the best in eclectic live music! We have the best bands from around town and beyond from 7PM then the Jam the Box DJ's plus guests will take control until 3AM with the usual mix of tripped out house, dub and techno, electrofunk, hip-hop, dubstep, new wave, b-more, 80's boogie, funk, soul and more,
