Archer was a founder member of Bizarre Inc. Nexus 21 and the legendary Altern8.

Altern 8 crashed the UK charts in 1991 with ‘Infiltrate 202’ and ‘Activ-8 (come with me)’, two chaotic slices of hardcore, the latter reaching number 3. They were aided in their chart aspirations by the circulation of fictitious press stories concerning their alleged activities, which included promoting the decongestant Vicks Vapo Rub, which, it was claimed, heightened the effects of Ecstasy; and standing as local candidates for the 1993 General Election.

Their live events were also designed as eye catching performances, where the band donned RAF chemical warfare suits and dust masks. Vinyl outings included the ‘Overload ep’ (1990), ‘Frequency’ (10,000 copies of which were on sale for a single day only and written solely by Archer), and another top ten hit, ’Evapor 8’, followed by ’Hypnotic St8’, the LP ‘Full on Mask Hysteria’ (number 10 in the LP charts).
Archer has gone on to record tracks as diverse as Nu Skool Breaks for Rennie Pilgrem’s label TCR, under the pseudonym ‘Mr Nex’, and remixed ‘Edzy’s’ – ‘Do it till you burn’ on Strictly Rhythm.

2007 was a return to the sound of Nexus 21 with the solo release of the 'Songs for Einna EP' on the Black Dogs new label offshoot DS93, the ep sold out before it's release date and has had collectors paying big money for the sought after vinyl only release.

The EP was followed earlier this year with the release on new label Mutate of the 'Ring of Gyges EP' which follows on from the DS93 release in style.

Mark has continued to dj throught his career in various styles but mainly on the 'Oldskool' scene playing classics from the golden era of 'rave' 1988-1992.

AGT RAVE CRU are old school cut up merchants who mix at a hundred miles an hour! DJ Magazine says: "like Altern8 meets 2manyDJs in fluro coats and Orbital Specs - this duo turned a gaping Smash Bloc floor into a Sunday Rave Riot with their cut-n-paste of tracks like 'Around The World', Reel 2 Real's 'I Like to Move it' and a 15 minute Prodigy medley - beyond insane!!"

We welcome you to Jam the Box on this very special night of full on mask hysteria. May edit in later, so watch this space!

I have a dislike for this kind of thing as I don't like to categorise music by year, as we all know, good music should be timeless. The most visible lists of this nature are usually very biased whether influenced by journalistic favourings, or a blindness to where the real creativity lies.

This is solely for the purpose of sharing some appreciation and love for some decent underground music on vinyl in these changing times and since I have no mixes currently posted up, it gives you an idea of what lurks in my box. Laptop/CD DJs, leave the hall!

Snuff Crew - Feel Inside (Hour House Is Your Rush Records)

For the KiNK & Neville Watson Remix of Feel Inside, lovely deep 90's Detroit flavour, drum machine builds very nicely, very rich sounding synths especially the bass line in the middle.

Mantra - Third Mind (Bunker Records)
Dirty raw acid harnessed in a very pleasing master and pressing, one for rough 808 and 303 lovers.

Tactic - Tactic EP (Dress 2 Sweat)
Limited white label B-more and dubstep remixes, MIA's 'Boyz' , 'Can't Juke Without Me' - an old Miami Bass track?, and a fully jacked up version of Ding Dong's dancehall banger, 'Badman Forward...'.

Bubblez - Move Down Low / Loser (Devotional Dubz)
For the version of Lady Saw - Loser on here, takes the original (which is an excellent slice of cheeky dancehall), sticks a massive jackin' drum machine behind it and adds some rough house synth samples, highlighting Lady Saw's irresistible agressive attitude.

Frozen Border - Frozen Border (Frozen Border)
The first release on another faceless imprint of techno possibly from Berlin (where it was mastered at D&M, where else!) has a nice 'classic' sound to it, Basic Channel repetitive sensibilities focusing on an upfront rhythmic dynamic, rather than endless reverb and delay.

Jared Wilson - Ghettoblaster (7777)
Dark, moody, minimal (no not that trendy shit!), stripped down, no nonsense classic Chicago sounding, acid, jackin, jackin, acid, vintage, classic did I say acid, moody, dark, minimal, acid (no not that trendy shit!)? Pick up the excellent 'Drug Related Stories' by the same guy on the same label from 2007, same style, excellent stuff!

Fuzzy Logik Feat. Egypt - In The Morning (Virgin)
Magically blends a basic Caribbean rhythm with dancefloor R&B, UK Garage and deep vocal house, it's the synth that binds it all together which is the icing on the cake, now has a generic 'we're all dancing in the club and looking beautiful' video, just listen to the music, that's my advice...

DJ Mystery Feat. Natalie K - Speechless
Similar style to Fuzzy Logik but with more movement in the bass department and a more softer vocal. Another feel good love song, UK Funky anyone?

Hot City - Hot City Bass (Ramp Recordings)
Massive Detroit style shuffle on the drums 4/4 and a one chord synth sample rhythm with some vocal snippets on the A side, huge bass, need I say more?

Levon Vincent - Solemn Days EP (Deconstruct Music)
Massive big looong tracks to get your teeth into here, plenty of nice reverb, delay, crisp hi hats, rim shots, handclaps, loads of spacey synths, works very well as early doors Saturday night tunes. Deep but not sleepy deep, track title of the year as well: 'Polar Bear Make Nice With That Sea Lion' which is full of highly pleasing Chain Reactionesque synth and bass action with the clear driving drums keeping any notion of valium techno firmly at bay.

Mike Dehnert - Umlaut2 (Clone Basement Series)
Levon Vincents NY Basement mix really steals the show here. If it's very danceable Electro Pop and heavy Synth Beats that your craving then these lads will give you a plenty to get your teeth into. Creating a perfect blend of Electronica and Rock, the floor is sure to be rammed come November 7th.

The Nature Boys - since their formation last year, they have already become a must see act on the Edinburgh live circuit. With punk sesiblilities and some rough edges, they have a frantic set list that comes together with nods to the likes of the Buzzcocks and the Ramones in their own irrepressible style. They lack some of the pretension which surrounds a lot of bands these days and are all the more refreshing for it.

Green Man Running - New comers to the live scene Green Man Running are currently causing a stir amongst music fans in the capital, so it was only right that we bring them to Jam the Box. Mixing the various musical influences of each band member to create down right dirty beats and haunting electro acoustic melodies, the three piece will be hoping to continue to win over the gig going public.

The Electric Ghosts - Edinburgh Folk Rockers The Electric Ghosts describe their sound as "Country Played faster then slowed down so you can hear the mistakes." These lads have been hard at work on the Edinburgh live scene for some time, but if you haven't been lucky enough to catch them, you can judge for yourself when they arrive on the Jam the Box stage this month.

Kerrie Lynch - We couldn't have asked for a better start to the evening as Kerrie brings her cool acoustic sound to Jam the Box. Laid back and stylish, Kerrie has been slowly building a reputation around the city and beyond. Be sure to get in early to see what all the fuss is about!

This month the bar is hosted by new music blog “Melange.FM”. It’s co-run by Danny Melange and James Thomas (JTB) and features a monthly mix of music from all genres, the idea of the blog is to promote music within a 2 hour show that will feature a classic album section, a record label feature and a guest mix from DJ’s we like. As well as the monthly shows there are regular posts of shorter feature shows that focus around an album or record label and there will also occasionally be random posts of single tracks or links to music related stuff, this weeks post is a feature on Stones Throw Records to coincide with the release of Mayer Hawthorne - A Strange Arrangement. Music kicks off at 7PM with DJ’s and live music till 11(ish) then the Jam the Box DJ’s will take over, this month we also have very special guest Polaris flying in from Ireland to assist in DJ duties too, expect everything from funk, soul and rock & roll to disco, house and techno…

Some info on the bands….

Alfonzo

First off we have Alfonzo, who are Daniel McGeever (Vox, Keyboard), Mikey Cook (Guitar), Chris Cook (Bass), Andrew Innes (Drums). They are a four piece band from Portobello, Edinburgh who formed a few years ago and have recently signed with Glasgow based D Set Records. They are currently recording their debut album and have played with the likes of Fratellis, Doves, Snow Patrol, Travis, and Feeder. These lads have been a firm favourite of ours for years and it’s been a long time dream to put them on! They play funked up 4-minute rock and roll anthems and are tighter than a crabs claw! This is sure to take the roof off Jam the Box and is their first gig in the Capital this year, catch these boys in a small venue whist you still can!

Din Eydin

Having only been playing live since late 2008, Edinburgh 4 piece Din Eidyn adds another element of surprise to the evening. Bringing heavy riffs and moody vocals to the table, the lads are starting to gain a loyal following, with their explosive live performance helping their cause. We're all looking forward to showcasing their talent to the Jam the Box crowd.

The Merchants

Young up-starts the Merchants only formed at the start of the year but have already made their mark on the Edinburgh live scene. The lads write catchy and infectious Indie Pop music with riffs that are guaranteed to get even the more reserved gig-goers stamping their feet. With influences ranging from the 60's mop-top-era to 90's brit-rock, you can expect an energetic display when they arrive at Jam the Box.

Johnny San Diego and The Naturals

Johnny San Diego rolls into town with The Naturals in tow for their first gig in the capital. Having only ever graced stages in their native USA, the lads arrive on our shores surrounded in mystery. This acoustic only 3-piece have been busy working on their live set for most of the year and come the 4th of July all will be revealed.

Doors from 7PM and it's £5 all night,

There will be a limited number of membership cards available for free on the night,Jam the Boxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02893829152563652651noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-391227676296723199.post-44476405816287486652009-06-04T05:47:00.000-07:002009-06-04T05:51:35.144-07:00Another MixThis time from Jam the Box resident Jimmy "Jammin" Thomas.

The mix was done for a show on Leith FM this Friday (5th June). It is no understatement to say Firecracker are causing quite a stir amongst the most discerning music lovers the world over.

This label and these artists aren't just hype, they have delivered big time and its just out of luck that they hail from Edinburgh and have spent most of their lives involved in the local scene, most notably at Edinburghs independent music outlet Underground Solu'shn and legendary clubs nights Tribal Funktion, Higher Ground and the still running Ultragroove. Since the release of their first EP back in 2004 Firecracker have firmly established themselves amongst their peers as one of the most talked about and respected underground labels out there with fans as diverse as Derrick May and Moodymann to Lindstrom and the Idjut Boys. After the sheer buzz created by the first three firecracker EP's, the public demanded a repress after they quickly become collectors' items and thankfully Firecracker delivered.

Now on their fourth release, a remix of "Miles Away" by Steve Hitchell aka Intrusion of Deepchord, which takes on Linkwoods biggest track 'Miles Away' with two utterly sublime and heart-warming renditions poised to soundtrack fuzzy summer moments across the world in the coming months, like the previous Firecracker releases this is housed in screen printed sleeves and hand stamped centre labels pressed onto lush heavyweight vinyl.

As well as their own Firecracker Recordings, Gav is involved in many other productions with artists such as Trus'me and Linkwood , as well as currently playing keys for adorable Edinburgh based band Found, not to mention busying himself with forthcoming solo projects for Prime Numbers. Meanwhile Lindsay is one half of Linkwood Family along with Nick Moore, and has in the past worked with Joseph Malik, as of course has Mr. Fingas...

To put it bluntly, if you know anything about House music then there’s a high chance you will know who these boys are. It’s going to be a potent brew of funk, soul, disco and house.

Miss this one at your absolute peril…

http://www.myspace.com/firecrackerrecordings

Room One: Firecracker B2B 3 Hour set + JTB DJ's

Room Two : JTB DJs
Jam the Boxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02893829152563652651noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-391227676296723199.post-78818402414177604312009-05-05T13:41:00.000-07:002009-05-05T13:42:32.711-07:00JAM THE BOX - Residents Mix
JAM THE BOX - Residents Mix

This is a mix recorded recently by the Jam the Box DJ's, 2 on 2 off and unplanned (which is what we do at the club), it was meant to be a 2 hour mix but one of the needles completely died about an hour in so we were forced to stop! gutted!

http://www.divshare.com/download/7208783-111

Chip E - Time to Jack (Trax)

Armando Gallop ft. This follows on from last years work with Rustie and keeps the same winning formula of Synth driven Dubstep and off beat basslines, Unique dubtep from a producer with a very bright future.
http://www.discogs.com/Joker-Do-It-Psychedelic-Runway/release/1734894

Next up is a track by Fred Ventura – “I’m not ready” on the mighty Clone. This is full on Italo disco originally released back in the 80's. Sadly this will be one of Clone records last release but them and I-F have re-issued this on glorious white vinyl and it sounds utterly amazing on a club sound system. This is vocal heavy with no break down, it just keeps going and going. A firm favourite @ Jam the Box.
http://www.discogs.com/I-f-ft-Fred-Ventura-Fred-Ventura-I-Cut-My-Heart-Out-Im-Not-Ready/release/1657543

Currently the techno market has been awash with expensive yet collectable dub techno. Many releases that have failed to push our bottons however this 2 track EP from Syrinx – “Million light years” on Rush Hour is certainly deep but very much dance floor friendly. Syrinx are Dutch and new on the scene (we think) although this release oozes experience on the production front and if they keep this up we'll be around for a long time.
http://www.discogs.com/Syrinx-A-Million-Lightyears/release/1638364

Detroits Aesthetic Audio run by the ever impressive Keith Worthy is known for their Beatdown sound but their latest offering by Tony Lionni – “5th Cycle” on the label is a sure fire techno thriller. Chopped vocal and punching four to the floor bass make this a proper peak time hit.
http://www.discogs.com/Tony-Lionni-The-Chronicles-Noir/release/1570024

This next track was originally released back in 1983, this defines the sound Electro for us. A simple groove with catching vocals. this got repressed after featuring on a Fabric Mix CD, think Egyptian Lover and Arabian Prince and you'll have a rough idea of what this classic record sounds like. Sexual Harrasment - I need a Freak - JDC Record
http://www.discogs.com/Sexual-Harrassment-I-Need-A-Freak/release/1113273

I have to admit, its taken me a while to get my hands this track by Mayer Hawthorne & The Country, its on super limited, super sexy red heart-shaped vinyl. Both sides of this are tremendous and sound like they were recorded in the late 60’s, “Just Ain't Gonna Work Out” is the winner for me and whats even more impressive is Mayer plays all the instruments and sings himself, signed to Stones Throw is is an instant classic and even label boss Peanut Butter Wolf took a while to realise just how unique this release was ““He showed me two songs and I didn’t understand what I was listening to,” Wolf recalls. “I asked him if they were old songs that he did re-edits of – I couldn’t believe they were new songs and that he played all the instruments.”
http://www.discogs.com/release/1536624

The next is actually 2 separate records, they’ve both been causing a serious impact on the floor and are as good as each other so thought I’d mention both! It’s the Equalized 12’s, so far there’s been 2 of them (001 and 002) with nothing more than a marking that says Equalized 001 or Equalized 002 stamped on one side of a white label, they are both seriously heavy, driving synth based techno with a very distict Berlin / Detroit feel about them, both are absolutely essential, these are produced by Shed who has been one of my favourite techno producers for a while now, his productions seem to capture the dark funk of Detroit perfectly, I really hope this series runs for a while!
http://www.discogs.com/label/Equalized

This one is an album I picked up recently by Fred Wesley & The Horny Horns - A Blow For Me, A Toot For You, this is one of what seems like an unlimited Parliament/Funkadelic off-shoots that George Clinton worked on in the late '70s, originally released in 1977 its classic ‘P-Funk’ produced by Bootsy Collins and George Clinton, it’s pretty much a dream line up of musicians including Maceo Parker amongst others, although the album is pretty much straight up Funk there are a few Jazz-Funk instrumental tracks on it that make it a great all round album for anyone into that 70’s Clinton sound!
http://www.discogs.com/Fred-Wesley-The-Horny-Horns-A-Blow-For-Me-A-Toot-For-You/release/475890Jam the Boxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02893829152563652651noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-391227676296723199.post-29734148623591486422009-04-17T06:31:00.001-07:002009-04-17T22:19:20.026-07:00Pictures from Jam the Box ... goes liveHere is some of the pictures from our last party...

The 10:04's

<img style="cursor:pointer; Influenced by the likes of The Strokes, The Libertines, Cribs and The Kinks, XoIV are rapidly becoming Edinburgh's most talked about band. Fresh from their sell out gig at The Mill, the lads bring their unique brand of high tempo and instantly catchy tunes to The GRV. With a UK tour planned for the summer, we suggest you catch them while you can!

"...the 1004s are a promising arrival on the Scottish music scene...a breath of musical fresh air...a definite one to watch." Evening Standard, London

"50 Quid is a cracking song...the guitar lines are great and Steven has a very listenable voice"
Dominic Diamond, Xfm

-------------------------------------------------------------

The High Lines

www.myspace.com/thehighlines

Edinburgh based Indie Rock band The High Lines were formed in back 2004, brought together through a mutual love of good music, guitar playing and song writing. The band, Ross Fraser (Vocals), Nick Plain (Lead Guitar), Derek Bowden (Bass), Shafter (Rhythm) and Jonny Clueworth (Drums), wanted to make music that they could all relate to and generally add some spark to the Edinburgh music scene. With influences ranging from The Ramones to the Beatles, and from The Smiths to Wire, the lads have built up a good reputation around the capital. Their unpredictable, fast and furious live shows have also won them fans across Scotland, regularly visiting Glasgow and Fife. Fan favourites "It's My City" and "Magic Machine" are sure to be well received when they roll into Jam The Box on April 4th. Get involved.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Lewis Gibson & the Midas Touch

Lewis Gibson of Dr Ruby's (Travelling Medicine Show) fame performs with the infamous Midas Touch to create a unique fusion of Folk, Blues, Pop and Rock; all with a distinctive Scottish twist.
